Dudhi is low in calories. It helps in digestion, weight loss, urinary disorders and prevents heart diseases. Chana dal is high in fiber and helps to lower cholesterol. It also has a very low hypoglycemic index, which is important for those with diabetes. It is a good source of zinc, folate, calcium, and protein. Chana dal is extremely delicious in taste, full of nutritious and can be digested easily.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Bottle gourd , cut into pieces - 1 katori
  • Split Bengal gram (chana dal) - 3 tsp or 1 ½ tbsp
  • Oil - 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Mustard seeds - ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 4 or 5
  • Ginger, chopped - 1 tsp
  • Onions, chopped - 1 small
  • Green chillies, chopped - 1
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
  • Salt  to taste
  • Garam masala powder - 1 tsp 
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped - to garnish

DIRECTIONS:
Step 1 Wash and soak chana dal in one and a half cups of water for an hour. Drain and keep aside.  Step 2  Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add asafoetida, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, ginger, onions and saute till the onions turn light brown. Add chana dal and chopped green chilies, Stir it. Step 3 Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix and continue to saute for 3-4 minutes. Now add bottle gourd pieces, garam masala powder, and chopped coriander leaves, mix it well. Put the lid on and pressure cook for 5 minutes. Open the lid when pressure is fully released and serve hot with chapati.
