Bengal gram is rich in protein and high in dietary fiber, making them an excellent heart-healthy food choice. It also helps in lowering the cholesterol level in the bloodstream. Chana dal is good for diabetic patients as it has a low glycemic index. Tamarind is a good laxative, digestive, and as a remedy for biliousness and bile disorders. 

INGREDIENTS:

  • Split Bengal gram (chana dal), raw - 20 g
  • Green chillies, finely chopped - 1
  • Tomatoes, finely chopped - ½ medium
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Cumin seeds - ¼ tsp
  • Mustard seeds - ¼ tsp
  • Dried red chillies - 2
  • Ginger - garlic paste - ½ tbsp
  • Tamarind paste - ½ tbsp
  • Red chilli powder - ½ tsp
  • Cumin Powder - ¼ tsp
  • Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
  • Coriander powder - ½ tsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - ½ tsp

DIRECTIONS:
Step 1 Soak chana dal in water for 30 mins. Drain and boil chana dal with tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt, green chillies and 1½ cups water in a deep non-stick pan till completely cooked but not mashed.  Step 2 Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add asafoetida, cumin seeds, and mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds splutter, add dried red chillies and mix well.  Step 3 Add ginger-garlic paste, tamarind paste, red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and mix well. Add chana dal, ½ cup water, and salt and mix well and bring to a boil.  Step 4 Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot.
