Khyati's Health-O-Meter Says:

Barley and fennel water is believed to increase milk supply.  It helps to ease gastric problems, constipation, and cold symptoms. Barley contains beta-glucan which is a type of polysaccharide that increases the production of prolactin in our body. An increase in prolactin signal the body to produce more milk. Barley also contains amino acid tryptophan which converts it into serotonin, which is a happy hormone as it contributes to wellbeing and happiness. When the mother is calm and relaxed it will allow her body to produce more breast milk for the little one.

INGREDIENTS:
  • Barley[whole or pearled] – ½ cup
  • Fennel seeds/powder -  1 to 2 tsp
  • Water [filtered] - 4 cups
  • Honey/jaggery – ½ tsp [OPTIONAL]
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1 Wash the barley grains well and soak them overnight in filtered water. Strain and keep the water aside. Step 2 In a pan, measure four cups of water, including the strained water (which carries the nutrients of barley). Step 3 Add in the soaked barley grains and fennel seeds and bring the mixture to a boil. Lower the flame and let it simmer for another 5 minutes. Step 4 Keep in mind that the longer barley simmers the thicker the mixture will become. If required, add more water to dilute the mixture  Step 5 Remove from the flame and allow it to stand for about five minutes or until warm. Strain and pour into a clean thermos so that it stays warm for several hours. Step 6 Drink this water throughout the day. Add honey or jaggery for added flavor.NOTE- Prepare a fresh batch each day. For a different flavor you may want to use methi seeds instead of fennel seeds.
